In Dayton, Tenn., 100 years ago a substitute teacher committed the crime of teaching evolutionary theory in public school. (The new ACLU wanted a “test case” to challenge the law.) America’s most famous lawyers argued the case. News media flocked to the town, giving it a carnival atmosphere. Today let’s consider the continuing fallout of the split between religious fundamentalism and secular science.
Was the test case worth it?
