Some scholars have argued that the admonition in 1 Corinthians 14 that women should remain silent was an attempt to reassert control over an outspoken and powerful group of Corinthian women prophets. We will explore this theory alongside Audre Lorde’s essay “The Transformation of Silence into Language and Action.” How can reading the voices of marginalized people back into ancient texts inform our lives today? And where and how might our own silences be transformed into language and action?
