Brought up as a Unitarian, this schoolteacher and inventor who died in 1862 continues to inspire us with his loving descriptions of the natural world and encouragement to slow down and pay attention to the ordinary details of life. Moreover, his nonviolent acts of “resistance to civil government” (and book of the same name) left a legacy for Mohandas K. Gandhi, Martin Luther King, and all of us.
