Notes on Today’s Music

“Prelude, Op. 9, No. 1 for the Left Hand Alone” – The Prelude was written by Russian composer Scriabin at the end of the 19th century after he suffered a hand injury from over-practicing. It was later performed by Nicholas McCarthy, the only one-handed pianist who graduated from the Royal College of Music in London through its 130-year-old history.

“Her Diamonds” – Rob Thomas wrote his song for his wife, who lives with an autoimmune disease. About the song, he said, “At the end of the day, it’s really a song about being empathetic, when the person closest to you is going through something and you can’t do anything to make it better except to be there for them.”

“Theory of Everything” is dedicated to scientist and cosmologist Stephen Hawking, who lived with progressive Lou Gehrig’s disease and made numerous contributions to his field.
