Volunteering for RE

Religious Education Needs You!

The Religious Education (RE) program at UUSS serves children and youth from infancy through young adulthood in weekly classes, worship services, and special congregational events and activities.

Your gifts of time, talents, and caring are what make our RE program work!

Many opportunities exist for UUSS members and friends to support the RE program through volunteering, including:

Spirit Play

Come be a Storyteller or Doorkeeper for this lively, engaging class for children in grades Kinder through 5. Stories and wondering time are followed by Montessori-style “work” chosen by the children. Volunteer for one Sunday or several. Training and stories are provided!

Junior High Youth Group (JHYG)Senior High Youth Group (SHYG)

Volunteer teams work together during the RE year (September-May) in scheduled classes (10 Sundays) featuring discussion, exploration, and spiritual growth for grades 6-8 and 9-12. The JHYG and SHYG promote understanding of UU values and identity, exploration of other faith traditions, and building of community.

Our Whole Lives (OWL)

Comprehensive, values-based sexuality education is offered to varying age groups at UUSS.  Teams of trained adult volunteers lead OWL classes and help promote respect for self and others, personal responsibility, communication skills, and current, factual knowledge about sexuality.

Coming of Age (COA)

Youth in grades 9 and 10 gather with selected adult mentors and UUSS leaders to explore UU identity and discuss personal religious beliefs. COA includes three weekend retreats, a service project, monthly meetings of the group, some homework and a special worship service with reception at the end of the program.

RE Committee

This committee is dedicated to giving assistance and support to the staff, volunteers and activities of the Religious Education program. Committee meetings are held nearly every month, plus various committee retreats and teacher training sessions. We are currently recruiting active volunteers to build a functional committee.
