November Morning, American River Parkway

November Morning, American River Parkway

Hi, Folks,

With my appreciation to our cleanup crew member Rayma Forrest for offering it, we have a quote from E. O. Wilson to set the spirit for our December invitation to clean up UU’s adopted mile of the American River Parkway.  As a renowned biologist and author, Dr. Wilson is known as “the father of sociobiology” and “the father of biodiversity”:

“Nature holds the key to our aesthetic, intellectual, cognitive and even spiritual satisfaction”

Even though our mundane task is to pick up trash, perhaps, as we find ourselves on the UU Mile this Saturday, December 10, we may unlock for ourselves at least a little of the kind of satisfaction that Dr. Wilson assures us that nature can provide. (And if these higher order levels of satisfaction from our work elude you, then you’ll at least know you’ve done a valuable public service!)  So please consider joining us between 8:45-9:00 AM in the parking lot at the west end of Northrop Avenue, next to the levee, near Panera off Howe Avenue.  If this will be your first time to assist, we’ll get your contact info and brief you on our cleanup activity.  The crew will clean up trash from the Parkway until 10:30 and gather at that time at the foot of the levee stairway for a quick photo of the results of our work.  Coffee and conversation afterward will be waiting for us at Panera if we choose.

This month,  John Abbott has offered to try using a four-wheel hand truck for carrying heavy bags of trash from beside the paved trail to the collection point.  Many thanks to John for his initiative!

I hope you’ll be able to join us on the Parkway,
Dave
