April Circles: Gifts

“Your gifts—whatever you discover them to be—can be used to bless or curse the world.”
Rev Rebecca Parker
This month we will explore the gifts that we have been given in this life, and how we choose to bless the world with these gifts.
Some of the gifts we receive are the result of the circumstance into which we are born. There is a certain amount of privilege that comes with being born in the United States of America, and additional privilege based on your race, class, sexual orientation, and other dimensions. These can create situations where people start the game of life in very different positions.
We will explore these ideas in the first session using a plastic cup, 30 skittles, and a list of questions. Some of you may remember this powerful exercise from a sermon about two years ago. The congregation responded strongly to the experience. You will have a chance to do this exercise and reflect on the feelings that arise.
Our second session we will use the images one final time for this circle year. As you view the 165 images laid out on tables, you will consider the question “how will you choose to bless the world with the gifts that you have been given? “
I have chosen some supplemental items this month to challenge you. The first is a video by Paul Kivel discussing white privilege: Wealth,Power and Class. Kivel is a writer and educator who has years of experience offering workshops.
The second is a reading from Rebecca Parker, former President of Starr King School for the Ministry. It is a Chapter from her book Blessing the World: What Can Save Us Now.
As always I welcome your questions, comments or feedback. Have a great month.
