Northwest Earth Institute Discussion Groups

Project Title: Hold Northwest Earth Institute Discussion Groups
Program Elements: Environmental Justice, Religious Education, Sustainable Living
Lead Person: Dorothy Mitchell
Status: Ongoing

Northwest Earth Institute (NWEI) programs encourage participants to explore their values, attitudes, and actions through discussion with other people. These programs are organized around three key principles: an earth-centered ethic promoting individual responsibility for the Earth; the practice of engaged simplicity to enrich life and reduce personal impact on the Earth; and a dedication to living fully in place and protecting the unique bioregion in which we live.

Discussion groups come together for four to eight meetings to discuss topics such as: Global Warming: Changing CO2 Course, Choices for Sustainable Living, Menu for the Future, Voluntary Simplicity, Healthy Children-Healthy Planet, Discovering a Sense of Place, and Exploring Deep Ecology. Discussion guides for each topic are provided by NWEI. Please see below for a brief description of each of the NWEI courses. For more information about the content of these courses go to nwei.org

These groups are terrific opportunities to explore these issues and make wonderful new friends.

Global Warming: Changing CO2 Course is a four session course exploring the history and science of global warming, personal values and habits as they relate to climate change, and personal actions to curb the effects of global warming. This course can easily be offered in your workplace, faith center or home.

Choices for Sustainable Living is a seven session course exploring the meaning of sustainable living and the ties between lifestyle choices and their impact on the earth.

Menu for the Future is a six session course course exploring the connection between food and sustainability.

Voluntary Simplicity is an five session course. This course addresses the distractions of modern society that keep us from caring for ourselves, our relationships, and our environment.

Healthy Children-Healthy Planet is a seven session course addressing how the pervasive effects of advertising, media, and our consumer culture can influence a child's view of the world.

Discovering a Sense of Place is a seven session course focusing on knowing and protecting our place: To understand the meaning of a bioregional perspective, and what it would mean to develop one, to consider the benefits of consciously developing an intimate relationship with your place, and to explore what it might mean to protect the place where you live.

Exploring Deep Ecology is an eight session course addressing core values and how they affect the way we view and treat the Earth.
